Flywheels

The term “flywheel”  is very much linked to the first generation of “UPS” systems. Older flywheel UPS systems consisted of a conventional generating set  (motor / generator) backed up by a simple rotating mass, called flywheel, that would help bridging small power transients. The electrical performances of the flywheel systems were rather poor when compared to those reached by their sophisticated successors : the dynamic UPS.

Although still in existence, the flywheel technology has been widely superseded by the new dynamic UPS technology  which incorporates a higher speed flywheel and features numerous other possibilities.
