More than a UPS : Two functions in one

Many industries have a combination of critical (UPS) and non-critical (SB) loads in their facility. The NO-BREAK KS®-SB is the perfect match to combine both load types by powering the critical loads at all times, and then powering the non-critical loads within a maximum of 10 seconds break.

The NO-BREAK KS®-SB eliminates the need of additional diesel generators, saves on floor space and eventually, saves on building costs. As a result, this reduces the total Cost of Ownership.

The critical loads (UPS) are fed via the conditioned power of the DRUPS: Q2 is  closed.

Non-critical (SB) loads are fed direct from the utility: Q5 is closed and Q6 is open.  When a utility interuption occurs the breaker Q5 opens and within a maximum of 10 seconds, Q6 is closed to provide power to the non-critical loads via the diesel engine.

On mains failure, the critical loads are automatically protected at all times.

The introduction of a tapped choke in the electrical scheme provides an additional advantage: in case of a short-circuit on the non-critical busbar, the critical load will be unaffected since the choke will reduce the influence on the critical busbar.

 

Note :  It is recommended that for all NO-BREAK E1-SB systems, the critical loads be larger than the non-critical loads.

Output power split example (in 60Hz):   

1.   UPS Critical load = 1500kW, total output power = 2000kW. Therefore the rating is 1500/2000kW.

 

 

Technical and economical advantages:

  • Critical and non-critical loads are supplied from one system, therefore no need to install a separate generating set for the non-critical loads
  • Compact solution with small footprint: only one room required for installation
  • Lower installation costs due to reduction in cabling and switchgear requirements
  • Possibility to parallel  systems
