Manufacturer of mixed signal chips for microelectronics

 

The manufacturing process of mixed signal (digital and analogue) chips for microelectronics is an extremely sophisticated process demanding a very strict manufacturing environment.

 

These chips are used for telephone switchboards, GSM chipsets, ADSL modems, in Bluetooth technology and in the area of automation for access control, sensors, airbags, and in Xe light control. Other applications are for computer peripheral hardware such as control motors for printers, scanners and battery management systems.

 

A Belgium based manufacturer of such chips found it necessary to undertake detailed research of its site before placing the first stone on a new factory's foundation. Part of the study involved checking the power supply quality and site vibrations. Any loss of electrical power or disturbance in the building could seriously damage the production process. in addition, any impact on production would result in serious financial losses.

 

The site analysis included monitoring the quality of the power supply delivered by the utility. It was found that disruptions (voltage dips, spikes, and transient interference) occurred approximately eight times per year and lasted less than one second. In addition to this, complete power failure occurred approximately once per year. The consequences of these incidents could then be associated to financial losses by calculating the amount of scrap product, the costs to clean and re-instate production lines and the personnel shift time lost.

 

It was found very profitable to invest on an Uninterruptible Power Supply and to install it on the new site. The DRUPS would clean up the mains power and guarantee production continuity with no breaks should the mains fail.

 

Solution

Containerised Diesel rotary UPS SolutionEURO-DIESEL was contacted by the customer's engineers to help solve the power problems at the site and also  to  help meet the stringent environmental constraints, particularly with respect to vibration levels.

The engineers opted to split the site load into critical and non-critical elements to enable the optimum use of the diesel back-up.

EURO-DIESEL
proposed a DRUPS system comprising of two EURO-DIESEL NO-BREAK KS®SB machines and housed in containers located outside the factory. The noise level was kept within narrow tolerances to comply with the stringent local regulation and the containers were mounted on heavily reinforced concrete slabs, isolated from the surrounding ground by polystyrene layers.

The NO-BREAK KS®SB system is an original solution enabling both critical and non-critical loads to be supported from one machine in the event of a mains failure.

In normal operation the mains power to the critical load is fed through a choke working in conjunction with a synchronous generator, which filters the mains power and provides voltage stabilisation. Meanwhile, non-critical loads are fed directly from the mains as normal.

When the mains power fails, the back-up diesel engine is started in less than 3 seconds. During this time the critical load is supported by the stored kinetic energy in the uniquely designed EURO-DIESEL accumulator and it suffers no interruption. The non-critical loads will experience a short outage of approximately 12 seconds and are then reconnected to the NO-BREAK KS®SB.
