  • 2017.01.05 | FORTRUST adopts Diesel Rotary UPS for backup power FORTRUST adopts Diesel Rotary UPS for backup power

Is it a generator? A UPS? A flywheel? The new backup power systems at colocation specialist FORTRUST bring these elements together. As FORTRUST expands its Denver data center, it will use Diesel Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply (DRUPS) from E1 Dynamics to provide emergency power during utility outages. The DRUPS unit features a diesel engine and a rotary UPS that uses kinetic energy, eliminating the need for batteries.

The DRUPS is one of several approaches being implemented by data centers seeking alternatives to traditional lead-acid battery systems. Some providers are turning to flywheel UPS units, which are being adapted to offer longer ride-through times. Another approach is the use of UPS systems using lithium-ion batteries, which are commonplace in devices like smartphones and laptops but until recently were impractical in data center use.

As FORTRUST prepared to add capacity at its Denver data center, COO Rob McClary and his team spent two years reviewing their options for backup power. The search  soon focused on the DRUPS units, which are common in data centers and mission-critical facilities in Europe, home to EURO-DIESEL, the parent company of E1 Dynamics.

“We have seen increased customer demand for premium colocation services,” said McClary. “The addition of the DRUPS will allow us to serve the growing high density needs of our customers and to do that in a more efficient manner.”

Efficiency with energy and space is important, but McClary’s primary focus was on reliability and whether the DRUPS could enable FORTRUST to extend its enviable record for continuous uptime. FORTRUST has had 100 percent availability in its Denver data center since it opened its doors in Sept. 2001, a stretch of more than 14 years.

    Looking Beyond Batteries

Although most data centers use lead-acid batteries, it doesn’t mean they love them. Maintenance is a particular headache, as batteries must be monitored and replaced as they fail. That’s why a number of providers are examining options that can save space and provide a better sustainability profile.

One option is a flywheel, a spinning cylinder which generates power from kinetic energy, and continues to spin when grid power is interrupted. Although a flywheel offers a shorter ride-through time (about 15 to 20 seconds), it eliminates the need to replace batteries and requires less space.

EURO-DIESEL DRUPS systems provide backup power outside a data center. (Photo:EURO-DIESEL)

The DRUPS system creates a power module that uses a flywheel (which it calls a “kinetic energy accumulator”) to support the data center load, but also includes a diesel engine.

McClary said the DRUPS are more efficient, have a longer-life cycle and take up less space than traditional static UPS and batteries, providing more expansion capabilities within FORTRUST’s data center.

“Our investment in DRUPS is part of our mission to innovate and create efficiencies in the data center industry,” says Bryon Miller, Chief Data Center Officer at FORTRUST. “We’re committed to being a leader in the data center space.”

    Design Innovations Focus on Reliability

Euro-Diesel is among a number of vendors offering rotary UPS designs that incorporate diesel generators. Data center operators in the U.S. may be familiar with similar products from Hitec, which have been used by Terremark and 365 Main, among others. Other players offering products in this space include Germany’s Piller and Hitzinger, which is based in Austria.

Euro-Diesel says its new DRUPS product simplifies several design innovations focused on reliability, including a flywheel that module rotates on the outer shaft of the drive train. Shifting the weight further from the shaft allows Euro-Diesel to use an accumulator with lower weight that rotates at a slower speed (less than 3,000 RPM) to provide the same amount of energy. This means less stress on bearings and lower temperatures, which should provide a longer life for the bearings.

Euro-Diesel and E1 Dynamics also use an electromagnetic clutch, which improves the reliability of the diesel engine and can allow for quicker handoffs from the flywheel to the generator.

FORTRUST has ordered two of the 2.5 megawatt DRUPS systems to support its 2017 expansion. The company will be adding a new phase to its Denver data center, which spans more than 300,000 square feet of space and 34 MVA of power capacity. The original phase of the project featured traditional raised floor colocation space, but FORTRUST now deploys space using data center modules from BASELAYER and CenterCore.

  • 2016.06.20 | EURO-DIESEL in the News - Jobs Regions 17062016 EURO-DIESEL in the News - Jobs Regions 17062016

  • 2016.02.05 | HEALTH & SAFETY – CENTRAL TO OUR APPROACH HEALTH & SAFETY – CENTRAL TO OUR APPROACH

EURO-DIESEL (UK) LTD is proud to announce their recertification by CHAS and the renewal of Safecontractor. CHAS (Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme) is rapidly becoming a construction industry standard.

It allows buyers to measure H&S standards fairly and consistently across a range of companies working in allied but often dissimilar trades. The aim of the scheme is to improve health and safety standards across the construction industry and to alleviate some of the inevitable duplication that exists when completing tender applications.

Participating major construction industry buyers such as Local Authorities, NHS Trusts, housing associations and increasingly private organisations can now logon to a single database and check the current status of all potential suppliers. Increasingly CHAS accreditation is requested by the UK’s major construction companies as it allows uninterrupted transparency in the lengthy pre-qualification system.

EURO-DIESEL (UK) Ltd has also successfully renewed its Safecontractor accreditation reinforcing our commitment to achieving excellence in health & safety. Safecontractor is a leading third party accreditation scheme which recognises very high standards in health and safety management amongst UK contractors.

Under the Safecontractor scheme, businesses undergo a vetting process which examines health and safety procedures and track records for safe practice. Those companies meeting the high standard are included on a database, which is accessible to registered users only via a website.

Said Rob Pitt, Managing Director of EURO-DIESEL (UK) Ltd ‘We take great pride in our achieving these renewals. Our commitment to these stringent Health & Safety benchmarks demonstrates our firm belief in Health & Safety good practice. Not only do the schemes enhance our enviable record for the management and application of H&S systems in the critical power sector; they also assist us in attracting new contacts as clients increasing recognise their merits’.

These two Health & Safety accreditations along with EURO-DIESEL (UK) Ltd’s Integrated Management System, which incorporates ISO 9001 Quality Management System, ISO 14001 Environmental Management and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health & Safety Management, demonstrate the Company’s commitment to excellence.

  • 2015.09.22 | BELGIUM | Great visibility for EURO-DIESEL at Talentum BELGIUM | Great visibility for EURO-DIESEL at Talentum

On Thursday, September 17, 2015, Stijn Briers, Partick Scarpa, Manuel Santiago Fernandes, Corinne Volders and Hélène Herwats attended one of the most known job fairs in Belgium: Talentum; it was the regional edition which took place in Liège.

Participating in this kind of event was interesting for EURO-DIESEL. Indeed, our main objectives were to meet candidates in order to find new talents for EURO-DIESEL’s current job openings, to constitute a reserve list for future recruitments, to further promote EURO-DIESEL and increase its visibility in the Liège area.

Given the great advertising campaign and the success of this event – more than 8,000 candidates for this edition compared to 6,000 in 2014 – it is clear that several of our objectives have already been reached.

In fact, we have met a wide variety of profiles: for example, young engineers freshly graduated looking for their first job, more experienced candidates seeking a new employment and some others searching for a new challenge.

    EURO-DIESEL at Talentum Liège 17 September 2015

  • 2015.04.17 | Chili I SECURISE A FRAGILE AND EXPENSIVE RESSOURCE: MOLYBDENUM Chili I SECURISE A FRAGILE AND EXPENSIVE RESSOURCE: MOLYBDENUM

The largest pit copper mine in the world is to be found in Chile, 200 km from Antofagasta.  It is owned by CODELCO who produces more than one fifth of the global annual ore volume and has resources for two hundred years.

The company also mines other precious ores such as molybdenum. Its primary use is in stainless and high alloy steels. A fragile and expensive resource, molybdenum was widely used during WW1 as its addition, even in small quantities, enhanced the strength and hardness of the steels.

CODELCO’s long held goal was to create an innovative manufacturing process to extract molybdenum from concentrates. This was achieved in 2012 and CODELCO created a company to develop this process in Mejillones near Antofagasta.

CODELCO has appointed ABB to oversee the implementation and servicing of advanced electro-mechanical equipment at the plant.  ABB, in turn, has chosen EURO-DIESEL, leaders in diesel rotary uninterruptible power supply systems, to ensure quality power supply and continuity in case of power outage.

EURO-DIESEL were awarded the contract to Design, supply, install and commission 2 EURO-DIESEL NO-BREAK KS® 5 UPS units powered by MTU 4000 series diesel engines.

The project poses a number of challenges: meeting CODELCO’s turnkey project deadlines; housing the units in containers rather than a building.  Environmentally the location is demanding – located in a Level 3 seismic zone, close to the sea.  Humidity and salinity levels are very high as are the levels of airborne sand and dust. Technically, the company’s requirement for power distribution at 600V is unusual.

EURO-DIESEL are providing two NO-BREAK KS® 1800 kVA 600V units.  Anti-seismic dampers are to be integrated into the frame along with sand and anti-dust filters which are to be fitted in a row.  The containers are to be secured to concrete slabs by anti-seismic anchorage. All the equipment is to be coated with special anti-corrosion paint.

Consideration has to be given to the plants remote location and accessibility.  With this in mind, minimizing the number of interventions on the NO-BREAK KS® systems and supply logistics have to be considered.  Automatic bearing greasing systems are incorporated into the design along with day fuel tanks providing an exceptional 6 hours autonomy.

Control and power panels are to be enclosed in a special fire resistant container with 2 hours resistance, a pressurisation system, air-conditioning and fire detection/protection systems.

The NO-BREAK KS® systems will be delivered in October 2015 with commissioning taking place before the end of the year.

    CODELCO

  • 2015.02.12 | The first 2 NO-BREAK KS®7e delivered in India The first 2 NO-BREAK KS®7e delivered in India

    SRFKS7e

SRF is a multi-business entity engaged in the manufacture of chemical based industrial intermediates. Its business portfolio includes Technical Textiles, Fluorochemicals, Specialty Chemicals, Packaging Films and Engineering Plastics and they are the market leaders in India for most of these ventures.

Its headquarters are based in Gurgaon, India with operations in both Thailand and South Africa. The Chemical Technology Group enjoy state of the art R&D facilities where they carry out product development and process innovations. India’s power infrastructure is under strain due to unprecedented economic growth, which quadrupled between 2000 and 2010 whilst the electricity capacity increased by only half. With demand outstripping supply, power cuts are almost a daily event even though only two thirds of households (900 million in a population of 1.2 billion) are connected to the grid.

SRF took the decision to approach several UPS manufacturers early in 2014 with the goal of securing the power supply to one such facility which produces synthetic textiles for the automotive industry.

EURO-DIESEL won this opportunity thanks to the efforts of Green Power, its local distributor, and the design benefits of the latest addition to the NO-BREAK KS range; the NO-BREAK KS®7e. Two 2750 kVA NO-BREAK KS®7e were delivered to the Malampur factory in November 2014.

  • 2015.02.12 | EURO-DIESEL delivers its first diesel rotary uninterruptible power supply systems in Finland EURO-DIESEL delivers its first diesel rotary uninterruptible power supply systems in Finland

    FINLAND

In September 2014, Kuopio Hospital, which is 400 km North of Helsinki, the Finnish capital, welcomed the first two diesel rotary uninterruptible power supply systems from EURO-DIESEL.

The Finnish market traditionally favours static systems. This success is the first step in opening up the marketplace to dynamic technology which has major advantages including ease of installation and space saving.

The first installation faced its challenges. Temperature variations in the Kuopio region are significant ranging from 35 ° C in summer to -40 ° C in winter and we had to adapt to overcome these hurdles. The customer chose to install both NO-BREAK KS® 5 800 kVA systems in containers specially designed and equipped to cope with extreme weather conditions. The containers were designed to prevent snow accumulation and ensure temperature regulation whilst providing an ingenious air recovery system. The commissioning of the first two NOBREAK KS® systems has been successfully completed and the third system will be installed shortly ensuring power outage protection for the hospital for many years to come.

  • 2015.02.11 | Russia: major development project Russia: major development project

Only a year after establishing its representative offices in Russia, EURO-DIESEL has installed its NO-BREAK KS® equipment in one of the largest data centres in Russia at the Datapro Company.

Datapro is a private provider of colocation services in Russia. The designed capacity of this Moscow based data centre is huge and it is a Tier III Design and Facility Certified by the Uptime Institute.

The significance of this project gives us the opportunity to highlight the inherent advantages of the NO-BREAK KS® systems to this marketplace. A unique part of this project is the non-standard design of the DRUPS systems due to the limited dimensions of site’s entrance where the power modules and electrical panels have to pass through. Our engineering department developed a solution with the ability to divide the power module into three parts and separate the power panel in two separate panels; the breaker section and a choke coil section. Two out of the planned four 1670 kVA NO-BREAK KS® systems have been shipped. The commissioning and start-up have been successfully completed in December 2014.

During the second half of 2014, EURODIESEL was honored twice by prestigious awards. In the month of October first, we won the Special Jury Matterhorn Crystal Prize as a reward for success in the Swiss market.

Despite its small geographical size, Switzerland is to EURO-DIESEL an important and recurring market. EURO-DIESEL has made significant efforts to expand its presence in the Swiss market by adapting to technical and administrative rules and by partnering with strong local companies, specifically selected for the type of targeted customers.

These efforts have allowed us to conclude contracts of great importance with leading companies such as Swisscom, UBS, Novartis, the Richemont Group (including Cartier), La Vaudoise, Firmenich and Swiss settlements of large international groups such as Philip Morris or Thomson Reuters.

Early December, the Walloon Export Agency held its biennial Awards Ceremony in Liege. It celebrates the export successes of companies based in the region, recognising those who have enjoyed particular success in growing export volume and expanding into new or challenging marketplaces. In this context, EURO-DIESEL won a 2014 Wallonia Export Award.

These successes have only been achieved by the efforts of each and every one of our employees and are something about which we should be very proud. Beyond the reward, these prizes encourage us to continue our international development.

  • 2015.01.20 | Swisscom datacentre awarded 'Watt d'Or' Swisscom datacentre awarded 'Watt d'Or'

A datacentre located in Bern-Wankdorf and owned and operated by Swiss telco, Swisscom has been awarded the energy prize 'Watt d'Or' in the category 'Renewable energies' by a jury under the patronage of the Swiss Federal Office for Energy.

The jury said the datacentre is one of the most secure, modern and energy-efficient such facilities in Europe. Only outside air and rainwater is used for cooling. The operator has also abandoned the use of polluting refrigerants, and feeds its waste heat into the city council's new heating network.

Last summer, the Bern-Wankdorf facility was awarded Tier IV Design Certification by the Uptime Institute.

Euro-Diesel successfully completed the setting to service of 4 units of 2000 kVA delivered to SWISSCOM Immo for their brand new datacentre.

This datacentre - name code  "xDC" - is located in the business parc of Wankdorf, close to Bern,  and is the most recent and most modern of Swisscom. It exhibits several interesting features.

It was designed with modularity in mind so as to allow Swisscom to adapt it to their growing needs in the future. This allows to optimize the capital expenditure: the owner of the facility is not required to commit a capital expense until he effectively needs it.  At "xDC" for example, only 2300 m² will be set to service in phase I, whereas the capacity will progressively be increased to 4000 m² with a total power available of 6 x 600 kW.

Swisscom's desire was to use the best technologies available both in terms of energy efficiency and environment protection. Thus, for the cooling of the datacentre, they used an advanced free cooling technology (based on ambient air rather than iced water) complemented by an ingenious device of evaporation of rain water, so as to reduce the water consumption.

The heat dissipated by the data centre will also not be lost, but injected into the district heating network, allowing thus to heat the neighboring residences and offices.  Thanks to all those measures, "xDC" will reach a PUE   (Power Usage Efficiency: one of the ways to measure the power efficiency of a data centre) of 1, 2 which is very low.

It is also for environmental reasons that Swisscom elected the rotary UPS systems of Euro-Diesel:  they do not require chemical batteries and their energy efficiency proved better that that of the static technology.  We also delivered highly effective emission optimized engines (Nox < 1700 mg/m³) moreover we fitted them with active particulates filters so as to eliminate the smallest soot particles.

Eventually, in order to be able to add machines without affecting the activity of the data centre, Swisscom designed a simple but ingenious single line diagram. xDC is expected to be TIER IV certified.

  • 2014.03.13 | GERMANY | A NO-BREAK KS® system for German law enforcers GERMANY | A NO-BREAK KS® system for German law enforcers

The Police Investigation Bureau (Polizeiinspektion Düsseldorf) has awarded EURO-DIESEL GmbH as the winner of turnkey UPS solution provider for their facility in Düsseldorf, Germany. The project, consisting of one (1) unit of 1000kVA NO-BREAK KS®5 at 400V, 50Hz, is expected to be commissioned in early 2015.

According to Guido Beimann, Managing Director of EURO-DIESEL’s subsidiary office in Germany, the smaller sized police stations are normally using low power rated static UPS systems or generator sets that are less than 100kVA in power output. Being the police headquarter office in the area, Polizeiinspektion Düsseldorf has the largest law enforcement facility. An operation of such scale will need a reliable UPS system with output power that is high enough to secure their IT infrastructure and radio communication equipment.

Like many other government tenders or bids where discussion before the submission of bids is close to null, being selected signify a good upfront solution in terms of turnkey system configuration, technical proposition, value proposition and total cost. With this win, Mr. Beimann and his team are confident that EURO-DIESEL will have many other opportunities to come in this market segment.

Other police organisations that EURO-DIESEL has provided UPS solutions to are located in the Netherlands and in the UK, with a total power secured of more than 8MVA or a total of twelve (12) units of NO-BREAK KS® systems installed.

    EverDisplay Optronics

EverDisplay Optronics (Shanghai) Limited, a professional manufacturer of AMOLED displays established in 2012, has awarded EURO-DIESEL with the supply, installation, commissioning and servicing of 2 units of 1900 kVA NO-BREAK KS®5 systems at 10kV configuration, with a possible extension to 3 units in total.

Located in Shanghai JinShan District, the Chinese manufacturer focuses on small and medium sized AMOLED display production and the research and development of next-generation display technology. The company is the first manufacturer in China who has production lines equipped with state-of-the-art machinery for Generation 4.5 of low temperature polysilicon (LTPS) AMOLED production. It is also the first company in AMOLED production process for achieving breakthroughs in the field.

Everdisplay Optronics needed a UPS system that will not only protect its manufacturing facility and ensure production continuity but also one that is energy efficient and better for the environments.  This goes along with the company’s vision to contribute to the AMOLED industry’s evolution in terms of protecting the environment and saving energy.

The use of NO-BREAK KS® systems, which has been developed to replace UPS systems with large battery cells and electronic components, can thus eliminate the need for special HVAC system or air-conditioned rooms, giving an optimized power efficiency for the user in the short-term and in a sustainable manner. These are advantages that help to reduce the total cost of ownership by cutting utility cost in the long term, the reduction in space needed to house the Diesel Rotary UPS systems and most importantly, remove the need to discard large battery cells which is a hazard issue for the environment.

The commissioning is due in summer 2014.
